Minutes 15jul2014

Participants: Florian Arfeuille (EMPA), Isabelle Bey (ETH C2SM), Dominik Brunner (EMPA), Ancelin Coulon (ETH IAC), Stefan Henne (EMPA), Tom Peter (ETH IAC), Andrea Stenke (ETH IAC, minutes), Zhen Zhang (WSL), Nick Zimmermann (WSL).

  • Welcome
    • The MAIOLICA-2 partners welcome Zhen Zhang, the new WSL Post-Doc, within the project consortium. Zhen will closely collaborate with Ben Poulter (Department of Ecology, Montana State University). For that purpose, Zhen will stay at Ben's lab until mid of November.
  • Report from CCES conference (26 Feb 2014) and mid-term review (27 Feb 2014)
    • Andrea provided a short summary of the CCES conference and the recommendations of the advisory board (AB) from the mid-term review (PDF distributed among project partners by email, 16 July 2014).
    • The AB attests the MAIOLICA-2 project high scientific quality.
    • Major criticism is related to the outreach activities within MAIOLICA-2. The AB suggests to get more involved in CCES@School, attract more Master and PhD students, and to interact more with policy makers. (see agenda item below)
  • Report CCES PI meeting (22 May 2014)
    • Tom participated at the PI meeting and made some suggestions how to enforce our outreach activities (e.g. ETH unterwegs, CCES@school).
    • The PIs discussed different possibilities for the final CCES event and the final CCES report. One suggestion was to have a special issue in a journal focusing on environment and sustainability, e.g. GAIA. The MAIOLICA-2 partners agree that it would be favorable to publish an overview article about CCES in such a journal (e.g. lead by Rene Schwarzenbach), but reject the idea of a scientific special issue including all different CCES projects. Tom will report the feedback of the MAIOLICA-2 partners to the CCES office.
  • Outreach activities
    • Isabelle will coordinate further outreach activities and report to the project partners by the end of summer:
      • CCES@school, ETH MINT learning center: Preparation of learning material for secondary schools, joint activity with CHIRP-2; Niki Gruber looks into already existing materials, projects etc.; available funding could be used to hire somebody part-time; contact Christina Colberg (Professor at P√§dagogische Hochschule Thurgau, education of natural science teachers, also at ETH)?
      • Focus Terra projection globe: presentation of CH4 from satellites/models or of wetland extent and biogenic emissions; Dominik will provide Isabelle with contact address.
      • Movies of global CH4 from satellites/models or of wetland extent and biogenic emissions for websites or screens at EMPA, CHN, etc. CSCS might provide technical support/tools for visualisation of data. Isabelle sent contact email to Andrea.
      • Scientifica 2015: Topic: Light, call for projects expected by end of 2014. The topic is not directly linked to MAIOLICA-2 research activities. Creative ideas are very welcome.
      • SNF Agora program (http://www.snf.ch/en/funding/science-communication/agora/Pages/default.aspx): SNF supports scientific outreach activities and dialogue with the public. Stefan Br√∂nnimann (Uni Bern) participates in an Agora program. So far it's unclear how this program works.
    • Interaction with policy:
      • Collaboration with authorities of Kanton Solothurn (established within MAIOLICA-1) has not been continued
      • CarboCount interacts with BAFU: CO2 and CH4 tower measurements -> verification of Swiss CH4 inventory
      • Klimarunde 2014 could be a possibility to get in touch with policy
      • In general MAIOLICA-2 will not enforce the interaction with policy makers or try to become a partner within the Swiss energy policy discussions since methane plays a minor role in this respect.
  • Annual report and seminar series
    • The second annual report is due 1 August 2014, length: 2-3 pages per work package.
    • Suggestions for GHG seminar series:
      • Florian will try to contact Philippe Bousquet again
      • Nick will invite Ben Poulter
      • Andrea will contact Stefanie Kirschke
      • 2 more seminars planned in Bern: Ingeborg Levin and Timo Vesala
  • Status of workpackages
    • Zhen, Florian and Ancelin gave an overview of the current status of WP1-3. The presentations will be available on the MAIOLICA-2 wikidot-site.
    • One open issue is the extension of the MAIOLICA CH4 wetland and rice emissions (provided by Elke) after 2007. So far, Ancelin uses a climatology. Ancelin, Florian and Zhen will discuss how to solve this issue.
  • Varia
    • Next meeting: end of November/early December. Andrea will set up a doodle.
